WELCOME TO OUR WINTER/SPRING 2024 CLASS LINEUP!

Classes are added on an on-going basis so visit this page often.  To register or to ask questions please call 306 652-6031. 

 

What you need to know regarding classes at The Sewing Machine Store:

  • Payment is required to hold your space in the class.

  • Registration is available in person or over the phone (using Visa or Mastercard)

  • A machine is available for your use if desired

  • If a class is cancelled you will receive a full refund.

  • Should you need to withdraw from the class please advise us as early as possible so we can fill your spot.  Store credit will be issued as long as the class has sufficient registration to run.

Quilting is a craft that can become addicting - in a good way!  It's never too late to join the fun.  Make a three-block table runner that gives your the opportunity to learn more than just the basics.  Complete the runner in class.  That means the cutting, piecing, quilting, binding, and learning and practicing the essential half-square triangle.  This is a no pressure class.  Work at your own pace but with the bonus of the company of others learning a new skill with you.

Do you want to dip into the world of sewing and want support to begin the journey?  This class is perfect for the beginner sewist or those who want to refresh their basic sewing skills.  Learn how to access, download, and use online PDF patterns.  Discover what sewing tools are a 'must' and which ones you might invest in later.  Create a versatile, reversible tote bag with pockets.  The pattern is designed by a Canadian company, Helen's Closet, and it's free.  Practice many swing techniques that are the foundation for all sewing.  Join Dora and become part of the vibrant sewing community.

What More Can My Serger Do?

So you have mastered the basics on your serger.  Well done!  Did you know there's more to a serger than just 3-thread or 4-thread stitching?  We will explore 2-thread capabilities with a focus on the amazing 2-thread flatlock.  We'll use heavy threads to make a polar fleece lap blanket that will get people talking.  Discover the differences between 2-thread and 3-thread so you know when to use one over the other.  A serger is a powerful tool in your sewing room.  This class will give you the knowledge to use it to its utmost.  Must have a serger that does 2-thread flatlock.

There are dramatic differences between woven and stretch fabrics.  It's important to understand these differences so you can have a quality finished product.

There are many types and weights of stretch fabrics.  Do you use your serger or sewing machine?  Which stitch works the best for each type of fabric?  Get your questions answered in this lecture/demo class.  We will discuss the different stretch fabrics, needles, threads, and stitches on both sewing machine and serger.  Get insight into problems you can have and how to fix them.

If you're a cat lover or just want to create a fun project that will brighten any room, you're going to love this cat theme pillow.  The focus is applique and using the decorative stitches on your machine.  You will learn order of assembly which is important in machine applique.  Find out different stitches that can be used for applique.  Use the features of your machine to the max.  Apply your new skill anywhere.

You've started sewing and you love it!  Take the next step.  Choose a top or shirt pattern that's suitable for woven fabric.  We can give you some help with that.  Learn about fit, pattern layout, cutting, seams and seam finishes, collars or facings, buttonholes and hems.  If you can make a shirt, you can make almost anything.  The class is designed for you.  It is suitable for beginners and beyond.

Beginner Swimwear Workshop

Any season is swimsuit season.  Experience how satisfying it is to make your own custom swimwear.  Jenny will demonstrate techniques and guide you through the step by step process that will result in a professional looking garment.  Learn about fabrics, lining and elastic, and how to construct seams and beautiful edges.  Create details like ruching, ruffles and adjustable straps.  Be prepared for a fun creative weekend with Jenny.  Suitable for intermediate sewists.

Serger 101

Two Session Class

Instructor: Kathy

After this six hour class, you will have made friends with your serger.  Learn how a serger works by focusing on basic theory which includes understanding tensions and choosing correct stitches.  Practice basic techniques - rolled hem, using differential feed, turning corners, attaching elastic, and using heavy thread.  To ingrain your new skills, you'll make a cover for your machine.  Come for tons of tips with lots of laughs thrown in.

Learn to Sew
Pants/Trousers

Thursday, April 18 & 25 and May 2 & 9, 2023

Instructor: Kathy Kennedy

 

It's easy to sew pants and have them fit.  To start, we'll take detailed body measurements and relate them to the pattern measurements.  After layout and cutting, construction is the priority.  There is a step by step system to get a perfect pair of pants.  Installing a zipper is as easy as 1, 2, 3.  Take the plunge and find out that you can make awesome pants.  Some knowledge of sewing required.
