Classes and Events



Classes are added on an on-going basis so visit this page often.  To register or to ask questions please call 306 652-6031. 


What you need to know regarding classes at The Sewing Machine Store:

  • Payment is required to hold your space in the class.

  • Registration is available in person or over the phone (using Visa or Mastercard)

  • A machine is available for your use if desired

  • If a class is cancelled you will receive a full refund.

  • Should you need to withdraw from the class please advise us as early as possible so we can fill your spot.  Store credit will be issued as long as the class has sufficient registration to run.

Imagine yourself starting a new hobby that will make winter fly by!  In this demonstration, discussion, and hands on class, learn about the tools and materials needed for quilting and how to use them.   Kathy will guide you through measuring and cutting, piecing, layering and quilting, and binding.  Make a pillow top or table topper to practice it all.   Voila!  You're a quilter.

Do you want to dip into the world of sewing and want support to begin the journey?  This class is perfect for the beginner sewist or those who want to refresh their basic sewing skills.  Learn how to access, download, and use online PDF patterns.  Discover what sewing tools are a 'must' and which ones you might invest in later.  Create a versatile, reversible tote bag with pockets or a practical butcher style apron.  The patterns are designed by a Canadian company, Helen's Closet, and they're free.  Join Dora and become part of the vibrant sewing community.

Serger 101

After this six hour class, you will have made friends with your serger.  Learn how a serger works by focusing on basic theory which includes understanding tensions and choosing correct stitches.  Practice basic techniques - rolled hem, using differential feed, turning corners, flatlock, attaching elastic, and using heavy thread.  To ingrain your new skills, you'll make a cover for your machine.  Come for tons of tips with lots of laughs thrown in.

You've started sewing and you love it!  Take the next step.  Choose a top or shirt pattern that's suitable for woven fabric.  We can give you some help with that.  Learn about fit, pattern layout, cutting, seams and seam finishes, collars or facings, buttonholes and hems.  If you can make a shirt, you can make almost anything.  The class is geared to you so it is suitable for beginners and beyond.

Every home needs a sewing machine and every home needs someone to repair or alter clothes.  Are you that person?  This demonstration and discussion is for you!  Kathy will demo basic hems (both hand and machine), shortening  jacket cuffs professionally, button sewing, zipper replacement in pants, sewing with stretch fabric and more.  Basic theory on how much a dress can be altered will be covered.  Bring your questions.

Do you know a child who wants to learn to sew?  This project is perfect for them.  Design a monster.  Choose different body shapes, facial features, arms, legs, and maybe even hair or antenna.  No two will be the same.  Learn sewing machine skills, basic applique, and hand sewing.

If you're like most embroiderers, you love to create one-of-a-kind embroideries.  Using a selection of designs we will look at sewing on velvet, thread velvet, positioning outside of the hoop, cut work designs and richelieu.  Once the theory is out of the way, you will create and stitch out a design that you can work into a project.  You get to keep the design CD with 33 designs and projects!
