What you need to know regarding classes at The Sewing Machine Store:

  • Payment is required to hold your space in the class.

  • Registration is available in person or over the phone (using Visa or Mastercard)

  • A machine is available for your use if desired

  • If a class is cancelled you will receive a full refund.

  • Should you need to withdraw from the class please advise us as early as possible so we can fill your spot.  Store credit will be issued as long as the class has sufficient registration to run.

It's easy to sew pants and have them fit perfectly.  To start, we'll take detailed body measurements and relate them to the pattern measurements.  The next focus is on construction.  There's a system to get a perfect pair of pants and you will learn it!  Installing a zipper is as easy as 1,2, 3.  Take the plunge and find out that you can make awesome pants for yourself.

Garment sewing is making a comeback!  Now is the time to refresh your skills and add to your repertoire.  This six session demo series is unique because we'll cover essential techniques and go into detailing that will make your garment stand out.  Join Kathy and expand your knowledge of the finer points of garment sewing.  Each session is outlined below but expect much more!

September 30  One step beyond the pattern - measurements, fit, minor pattern adjustments, repositioning darts, interfacing

October 14  Step by step - pressing, zippers, topstitching, adding your own detailing, when not to use your serger

October 28  "But it looks homemade" - pockets, button holes, collars, and cuffs

November 4  Have you ever thought about ... - threads, seam finishes, facings vs binding, working with difficult fabrics

November 25  You're almost done - hem finishes to be proud of, wing needle detailing, twin needle

December 2  Customizing your garment  - using more than one fabric, appliques

After this six hour class, you will have made friends with your serger.  Learn how a serger works by focusing on basic theory which includes understanding tensions and choosing correct stitches.  Practice basic techniques - rolled hem, using differential feed, turning corners, using elastic, and using heavy threads.  To ingrain your new skills, you'll make a cover for your machine.  Come for tons of tips with lots of laughs thrown in.

Serging Ahead
Advanced Serger Techniques

Are you comfortable with your serger but want to know more?  In this class we'll cover some really cool adaptations of the basics.  We'll spend time on coverstitch essentials then move to the decorative uses of your machine.  Flatlock, picot edge, and blanket stitch are striking and very useable and will not be where we stop.  If you seriously want to use your serger more, this class is a must.
